Picasso's Guernica: History, Tranformations, Meanings (California Studies in the History of Art) Details

From Library Journal These authors add to the mass of writing about Picasso's mural Guernica , each contributing new ideas from different perspectives. An American authority on Picasso who was instrumental in the return of Guernica to Spain after its 40-year "exile," Chipp has written a book thorough in research and rich in style. The chronological development of the painting is only a part of this broad historical, political, and artistic documentary. In contrast, Fisch limits his analysis to rigid interpretations. By carefully examining the similarities to Picasso's former works and those of his artistic predecessors, who also painted of war and destruction, Fisch methodically isolates each facet of the painting. He argues for a new interpretation of the figure of the angel bearing light, often felt to be misunderstood by art critics. The arrangement of the plates in each book underscores the texts well. The photographs in Chipp's book also give a pictorial account of the times and events that helped shape Picasso's most important work.- Suzanne J. Rarely, if ever, have I read an account that was more satisfying. It is written in the most clear, concise, and elegant fashion with no wasted words or self-consciously elegant prose. Chipp beautifully documents Picasso's personality and attitudes toward his work, his personal relationships, and his political beliefs. This book is, in many ways, a neat and compact introduction to Picasso as a human being as well as an artist."—Edward J. Sullivan, New York University Read more See all Editorial Reviews

I like the book very much. As far as I know it is the only publication that addresses the Guernica painting and its context. The book is in good shape.
